Engine electrics for cars: find out more! How to choose, when to change , and how much they cost
Engine electronics states for an engine electronic control unit (ECU). It controls the most important parameters of the engine operation.
Types of ECU- gasoline engine control system;
- electronic diesel control.
These types have a lot of modifications, so if you are looking for engine electronics for your car, check with its technical documentation.
Design and operation of the electronic control unitThe control unit includes:
- input sensors (in modern cars there can be more than two dozen);
- an electronic control module;
- operation units of engine systems.
Using input sensors the parameters of the engine are measured. Indications are converted into electrical signals. The information from the sensors is received by the car ECU. Based on this information the engine control is made. The operation units are parts of the particular engine systems. Under the direction of the ECU are the following systems:
- fuel;
- intake;
- exhaust;
- injection;
- ignition;
- cooling;
- EGR and others.
To date there are no generally accepted modes of ECU maintenance. We recommend you to monitor the performance of the sensors and operation units during scheduled inspections of systems to which they belong.
According to some reports, the fault-free operation life of the control unit is about 10 years. Accordingly, the same frequency of its diagnosis will not be superfluous.
Do not ignore the readings on the dashboard: the control system can very quickly notify you about its faults.
Faults of ECU- loss of sensors performance;
- loss of functionality of connectors, fuses, and wires;
- failure of the control module;
- irregularities in the operation units.
- unstable operation of the engine;
- engine start is hindered;
- unstable engine idling;
- engine work is accompanied by strong vibrations;
- dynamic characteristics of the car decrease;
- engine capacity decrease;
- rpm is limited;
- increase in fuel consumption;
- flashing lights on the dashboard.
- poor quality of the system components;
- installation of elements not complying with the technical documentation of the vehicle;
- ignoring the manufacturer's recommended service life
- frequent voltage fluctuations, failure in the electric circuit, short circuit;
- corrosion of metal components;
- contact oxidation;
- Incorrect assembly of parts;
- Improper maintenance of the system;
- the use of low-quality consumables;
- intense force action (e.g., in case of accident).
Diagnosis is carried out by means of special devices, so at the slightest suspicion of ECU failure you should immediately contact the service station for a detailed analysis of the system.
Repair and replacement of the ECUWe strongly recommend to make repair and replacement of ECU elements at a service station. Without appropriate skills and specialized equipment they are very problematic to carry out.
